As you may or may not know, I was recently challenged in my mastermind group to do a 21-day video challenge.
Well, I did it!
The thought of getting in front of a camera was very scary to me. In fact, I have been avoiding it for a very long time. Even knowing that it could help me grow my business, the fear was stronger than the potential reward.
But, I did it anyway. And having a supportive group of people to cheer me on helped a great deal!
So here's what I learned from doing this video challenge.
1) Your fear is not as scary as you think
Doing this challenge made me relate to the message we have on our car mirrors that reads "objects in mirror are closer than they appear", but in this case, it reads "fears are scarier in your head than in really life".
It's so easy to overthink things and to make up stories in our heads about what the scary thing really is all about.
We need to give some serious thought to what the fear is all about and get the support we need to push through it.
Ask yourself: What could be the worst possible outcome if I did the thing that scares me? The answer might surprise you!
2) You can do anything you set your mind to
"You can do anything you set your mind to" is something my mom told me this many times growing up. It's also something I repeat it to my children often.
Can you remember a time when you really wanted something and that's all you could think about? You worked hard and made it happen, no matter how difficult you thought the process would be?
You might be telling yourself that you don't really want the thing because you are letting fear get in the way. But if you kindly acknowledge the presence of fear and focus on the potential rewards of doing the thing, you'll be surprised at the results.
3) Something you fear might actually turn out to be fun
It didn't take me long to realize that making these videos was just plain fun! I allowed myself to do it imperfectly and even though I'm not super happy with how some of the videos turned out, I did the thing and now I'm moving on.
It was all in good fun and has allowed me to build my confidence in this area. And that alone made it all worth it!
