How I'm Creating a Personality-Based Business

career design your life Mar 14, 2023

Recently, as I was reading Chill and Prosper by Denise Duffield-Thomas, I realized that my business model needs to be aligned with my personality. She recommends you "build your business around the results of personality tests."

What?!? Why didn't I think of that? Is that why my business has been feeling "off" lately? Because I was trying to fit myself into a model that just doesn't work for me?

I love a good personality test and have done numerous over the years. It's always very interesting to me to learn more about who I am and WHY I am that way. Lately, I've had them popping up for me in different places - in courses I'm taking or in my inbox.

I guess the Universe is trying to send me a message. And now I am ready to listen.

Thing is, in the past, I've taken them, quickly scanned the results, and moved on. How can I possibly move forward, and make the necessary changes in my life and business if I don't try to learn from them?

It's like anything else in life - if you don't put what you learn into practice, how can any of it possibly make a change for you?

What's my personality?

I want to share some insights into some of the personality tests I've taken. These are very basic descriptions and there is so much more to dive into! I'll then share the resources I used so you can get your own results. I want to mention as well that these descriptions are more positive-focused. No need to dive into the negative stuff just yet.

Myers-Briggs - INFJ

The Myers-Briggs test is a popular one and offers a lot of great insight into who I am. I'm an INFJ personality, which stands for Introvert INtuitive Feeler Judger.

I value my alone time and do my best creative work during that time. I'm also very intuitive and have the ability to connect deeply with others. But I also take on their energy, which can be challenging at times. As a judger, I'm a natural planner, organizer, and decision-maker.

I have to say that of all the tests I've taken, the results of this one resonate the most with me.

Enneagram type 9 - The Peacemaker

As for my Enneagram type, I am a Peacemaker with Individualist (type 4) and Helper (type 2) tendencies. Many of the attributes mentioned for each of these 3 types make a lot of sense and I had many "lightbulb moments" reading my report.

As a Peacemaker, I am patient, steady, easygoing, receptive, relaxed, unselfconscious,
agreeable, uncomplicated, contented, comforting, sensual, and idealizing.

The Individualist part of me is intuitive, sensitive, impressionable, quiet, introspective,
passionate, romantic, elegant, witty, imaginative, and self-expressive.

And as a Helper, I am caring, empathetic, warm, thoughtful, appreciative, generous,
other-oriented, tactile, affectionate, well-intentioned, and demonstrative.

Moon type - Magical Manifester

As a Magical Manifester, I have the ability to connect with the moon to manifest what I want in my life, with my lunar energy being at its peak during the New Moon. I find this incredibly interesting and have started trying out planning according to the moon's cycle using Yasmin Boland's Moonology Diary. I'm looking forward to seeing how that goes.

Human Design type - Manifesting Generator

My Human Design type is the Manifesting Generator. I haven't explored the details of what this means yet, because there are a lot of intricacies to this personality typing. But I'm excited to learn more in the future.

What does this mean for my business?

Of course, a lot of the things I found through these personality tests I already knew (I'm intuitive, remember?). But diving deeper into the results and gaining more insight into WHY I am the way I am has given me permission, in a sense, to unapologetically be me!

But what does this mean for me and my business going forward? It means that I can use my strengths to build a business that suits my personality. Some might think that's a no-brainer, but oftentimes in life, we end up conforming to what others around us think we should do. We become a bit timid at stepping into our zone of genius to create our best life.

I have often found myself looking to creators I admire for inspiration. I like to see how they present themselves to the world and then I find myself mirroring their business model. This never works for long though. I either get bored or it simply doesn't work for me. So, I move on to something else and the cycle repeats itself.

I want to create in a way that uses my strengths and is authentic to who I am. I know I have a lot of wisdom to share with the world and I want to serve my audience in the best way possible.

Are you curious about your personality type?

As I mentioned earlier if you're interested in understanding more about why you are the amazing person that you are, here's where you can find each of the personality tests I talked about:

Note: Most of these tests are free and many offer a "full" report for a fee. The only one I ever paid for was the Enneagram test.

Myers-Briggs test

Enneagram type - I took my test here (which did cost $12), but I also found a free test here, but can't really speak to it as I've not taken that version of it.

Moon type

Human Design type

Also, here are a few more if you're interested in digging a little deeper into other specific areas:

Sacred Money Archetypes®

The Do It Scared Fear Assessment

There are countless personality tests out there. Just google your area of interest + personality test and you're sure to find what you're looking for.

What personality tests will you take? Do you have favourite ones that I haven't mentioned? Please share in the comments!
