I'm pretty sure everyone's heard of the book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. Her methods may seem a little bit "out there", but I do believe she's onto something.
We all know that decluttering creates physical space. It leaves more room to enjoy the things we truly love.
But it's so much more than that.
By letting go of things that no longer serve you, you're releasing negative energy. And that can be powerful in making space for more positivity in your life.
Have you ever noticed the feeling you get when you open a closet to find a big giant mess? Maybe it's just me, but I know that my anxiety and frustration level can go up, especially when I know that the thing I'm looking for is buried in there somewhere.
I know that it doesn't bother some people to live like this. In fact, I'm sure that for some, it gives them a sense of comfort and security. But that's not me. And it might not be for you either.
I feel anxious and frustrated when I see clutter around me. I don't remember seeing much clutter around home growing up. My mother was crazy organized! Maybe it has something to do with us moving often so a lot of decluttering was done each time we moved. She just didn't hang onto a lot of "stuff".
In reality, I think it was just part of her personality and I'm very grateful that she passed that on to me.
Here are some practical ways you can release "stuff", making you feel lighter and more empowered in your life:
1) Let go of anything that has negative memories attached to it.
2) Let go of broken things.
3) Get rid of clothes that don't fit or don't feel good to wear.
4) If you live with others who have difficulty letting go of their stuff, have a space that is theirs (preferably with a closing door) so that it doesn't zap your energy.
5) Donate as much as you can because the stuff that no longer serves you could just be the thing someone else needs in their life. And the planet will thank you for it!
6) Give everything a home so you can easily find what you're looking for.
7) Challenge yourself to get rid of things instead of buying more storage bins.
8) If you decorate during any kind of holiday, make sure to get rid of anything that doesn't bring joy. Don't put it back in the box "just in case" you change your mind next year. You're probably not gonna miss it.
9) Use the 10-minute tidy method every day in order to stay on top of the clutter.
10) Eliminate paper clutter by scanning any papers you need to keep and then shredding them.
(Side note: Obviously, some papers like birth or marriage certificates should be kept in a safe place and should not be shredded).
11) Think about where you want more abundance in your life and declutter there to make space for it.
I hope these tips have helped you on your journey to living a more decluttered life and feeling more empowered in the process. Be kind to yourself and don't expect to do it all at once. Every step you take towards living a decluttered life will have an impact. Just keep going. You go this!
